At the July 27 awards dinner for the California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers Contest, Metro Newspapers writers, designers and editors picked up the following laurels.

First Place, Best Editorial Cartoon: Steven DeCinzo for his Oct. 5, 1995, cartoon on the O.J. Simpson verdict ("The LAPD Beatings," showing police getting hit by O.J. jurors)

Second Place, Best Writing: J. Douglas Allen Taylor's essay for the Nov. 9, 1995, Literary Quarterly on reading in the post-multimedia world.

Second Place, Lifestyles Coverage: Arts editor Gretchen Giles and longtime contributor Sara Peyton shared the award -- Giles for a story about the child abuse inflicted on a west county resident, and Peyton for an article about people meeting their soulmates through the romance personals

Second Place, Sports Coverage: Contributor Bill English won for an article about Sonoma Crusher owner Bob Fletcher's effort to bring professional baseball back to the county
