[whitespace] E-Publishing How-tos

By Irina Reyn

If you are interested in having your work published with an e-book publisher, there are some guidelines.

  • You must have a complete manuscript ready before contacting publishers. Although sometimes a portion of a manuscript will be sufficient to snag a book deal from a traditional publisher, most e-book publishers have a shorter lead time and must be able to publish immediately after expressing interest in your work.

  • Before submitting your work, make sure to peruse the e-book publishing site carefully to ascertain that what they are publishing jibes well with your work. (A publisher specializing in romance will hardly appreciate receiving a memoir of your gustatory travels around Southeast Asia.)

  • Follow their guidelines carefully. Because of the volume of mail they get, they will focus their attention on those who give them all the information they need.

  • Email a query letter giving some information about the chapters you are sending, as well as your publishing background and why you want to be published by this specific publisher. Remember that although this is being emailed, it should have the professional quality of a hard-copy business letter.

  • Include a few chapters. Publishers vary on how much work they want to see at first, though usually it will be approximately three chapters. See their guidelines.

  • Wait! If the publisher is interested, he or she will call you to see the entire manuscript
