Viva! La Women

[whitespace] Lilith Fair returns with most eclectic roster ever

By Michelle Goldberg

As a cultural concept, the Lilith Fair may be exhausted, but musically the lineup for the upcoming show is the richest and most eclectic ever. In addition to Cibo Matto, Beth Orton, the Pretenders, Luscious Jackson and the Murmurs will perform. "I think the Lilith Fair is wonderful. It's really cool that this women's festival exists," Honda says. "I actually had to look up the word 'feminist' in Webster's after our last album because people kept asking me about it. There are definitely some negative images associated with the word. I was so happy to read the definition that says it's not about women being superior to men but women being equal to men. We wanted to call the album Viva la Woman not to say 'fuck you' to men but to say how beautiful it is to be women.

The Lilith Fair takes place July 13-14 (Cibo Matto plays on July 14) at the Shoreline Amphitheater, One Amphitheater Parkway, Mountain View; $31.50, $59 and $76; 415.478.BASS.
