Stellar Stovepipes

Hats from another galaxy
No hat looks cooler than a faux-fur Stovepipe on Malcolm's head. Malcolm is a multimedia artist who lives on Nantucket (an island off the coast of Massachusetts), whose Stovepipe Hats are the alternative to the pompom ski cap for hipsters on windy city streets and snowboarders on frosty mountains alike. Stovepipes are tube-shaped hats made of super soft and fuzzy Polartec® and Microfleece®, which some avid Stovepipe-wearers claim could keep any head warm even in outer space. "In the winter of 1991, I made one just to wear for myself," says Malcolm over the phone from his Nantucket home. "Everyone commented, 'Where did you get that hat?' That next year I came up with a logo and made 50, hats which sold in two weeks. They are warm enough for space." Just last year, Patagonia in Boston sold 175 of his Stovepipes, and this year they ordered 200 more. His hats can also be found in Manhattan, Boone, N.C., Aspen and Telluride, Colo. But selling Stovepipes isn't all that Malcolm does--on this terrestrial globe, that is. Recently he created eight sets of graphics for 5151 snowboards, a snowboard company now owned by Ride in Preston, Wash. He also designs caps, T-shirts, logos and websites. Check out his site at www.malcolmdesigns.com. Until then, here's more on Stovepipes: They are designed to be functional and stylish. Fold the bottom, and you can change the hat's size, shape and height. Lined hats are reversible, and all have an embroidered logo.
