Council Aides
First Aides Clearly, diversity is a high priority for the mayor and city council. Three of San Jose's 10 most powerful political aides are people of color. Four are women. But not all council offices are represented in the top tier. Councilmembers and the mayor are allotted a cache of funds each year for staff and office expenses. Some hire more staff at lower pay; others invest in a few well-paid, hard-driving staffers. Here's a tip: If you want to get paid more than $75,000 a year, get on Susan Hammer's staff. As a point in contrast, San Francisco's supervisors are each allotted only two aides who are paid between $43,300 and $52,600.
