April Fools on the Net ;-)

Remember when Bill Gates made his bid to acquire the Catholic Church ("to make religion easier and more fun for a broader range of people")? Or when the phone company announced its innovative new 900 service: real-time 911 chat lines enabling callers to "experience real-life drama while it is going on, all from the comfort of their own home"? No? Does April 1 ring a bell? Prank postings on the Net have become something of an April Fools Day tradition. If you fell for them the first time, here's your chance to be gulled again. April Fools on the Net collects the best prank messages (along with some pretty lame specimens--hey, whadda you expect from Dilbert-esque technogeeks?) of the past decade. And as in real life, Bill Gates always seems to take center stage. There's the sham PR announcement of "Microsoft Windows for the Macintosh." And of course, the dead-on satire of Pope Bill's Vatican acquisition: "... Critics say Microsoft will face stiff challenges if it attempts to limit competitors' access to these key intellectual properties [the Bible]. 'The Jewish people invented the look and feel of the holy scriptures,' said Rabbi David Gottschalk of Philadelphia. 'You take the parting of the Red Sea--we had that thousands of years before the Catholics came on the scene.'" (JW)
