Interpol
TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS:
Will the New York indie rock band Interpol ever escape comparisons to Joy Division? Of course not, and why would they want to? A legitimate question, considering that in interviews, the members of the band often try to distance themselves from their musical forebears. A futile effort, and unnecessary at that--Interpol's gloomy post-punk sound is almost always instantly recognizable, thanks in part to singer Paul Banks' weird, over enunciated delivery. On their newest album, Our Love to Admire, Banks still sounds as ominously monotone as Ian Curtis, but they have undeniably outgrown the clone war by finding a larger palette of sounds to work with.

The Frontline
YAY AREA:
While most concerts these days hardly seem worth the price of admission and the old adage "you get what you pay for" usually holds true, once in a while a show pops up that defies all logic. The exception this October is hip-hop duo The Frontline, who will play a free gig at Rasputin Music in Mountain View. For less than a penny, you and your crew can check out one of the Bay Area's hottest rap outfits courtesy of MCs Left and Locksmith. Always reppin' their hometown of Richmond, The Frontline gets down and hyphy while staying true to their roots and their fans.

DJ-AM
AM TO PM:
This may be the closest San Jose will ever get to being in the presence of Nicole Richie--a visit from her ex-fiance, mash-up king DJ AM. Born in Philadelphia as Adam Michael Goldstein, DJ AM has also been romantically linked to singer/actress Mandy Moore and has played private parties for the likes of Jessica Simpson and Ashton Kutcher. Now 34, the owner of L.A. night club LAX has garnered acclaim beyond being linked to Hollywood's elite, having worked on albums with Madonna, Will Smith and Papa Roach and formerly been a member of one-hit-wonder Crazy Town. DJ AM takes to the turntables for a special performance at tonight's installment of Recreation, also featuring local DJs Jefrodisiac, Solarz and Guzie.

Friday Night Free Fest
BEATS 'N' BILLIARDS:
Lucky Lucianni is becoming ubiquitous in the South Bay, representing and hosting underground hip-hop cyphers and showcases all over town. Meanwhile, South First Street Billiards has been experimenting with live music in the front lounge area, often striking the perfect balance between live, loud music in the front while keeping a mellow pool-playing vibe in the back--sort of a reversed mullet, if you will. This Friday night, Lucianni will take the stage at Billiards to host the Friday Night Free Fest, an evening of local underground hip-hop.

T.S.O.L.
LADY LIBERTY:
Amazingly, T.S.O.L. are coming up on their 30-year anniversary as a band. Originally formed in Long Beach back in 1979, True Sounds of Liberty have experimented with pretty much every subgenre of punk (with notable forays into horror punk and deathrock), and even some hair metal to boot. They're touring in support of their latest record, Live in Long Beach.

Rivals w/ Gunslinger
ICE CREAM:
Critics of hardcore punk will always question the amount of talent it takes to get up onstage and scream into a microphone over some power chord guitar riffs--and they've got a good point. But bands like Rivals prove that good hardcore also requires plenty of in-tune vocal melody and solid instrumental work in addition to the ear-splitting screams that separates the genre from its softer compatriots. Hear the distinction for yourself this Friday at Johnny V's; Gunslinger opens.

Currency .357
HELL-ROCK:
With song titles like "Face Crusher" and "Epic Death," Currency .357 won't be opening for Jack Johnson anytime soon. Their hellish instrumental soundtrack would sound perfect in a stadium opening for old-school thrash metal acts like Slayer or Deicide, because even though they might be influenced by galloping skate-punk bands like Pennywise, their technically gigantic sound would dominate like a gun at a knife fight.

Shit Outta Luck
SOL:
Remember early No Doubt? Here's a reminder--before they sold their soul for commercial domination, they were a kick-ass ska band led by a then little-known Gwen Stefani. And though the early '90s may be long gone, lucky for us we can relive the days when Nirvana was the new Beatles, thanks to a mighty little ska band called Shit Outta Luck. Emerging from Hayward, the seven-member group encompasses the sound and energy of top-drawer third-wave ska. A female vocalist named Katy hits notes across all registers, while a killer horn section lets loose with brass-happy abandon. Though they may be a few years late on the scene for a chance at pop-stardom, they certainly have all the talent they need to reel in a little good luck.

Silent Envy
SO POPULAR:
They've got almost 7,000 friends on Myspace and a new album that's selling well, so it seems to be only a matter of time before San Jose's latest pop-punk sensation, Silent Envy, makes a break for the big leagues. Catchy hooks and melodic punk crooning is the formula, and Silent Envy wants nothing more than to stick to what works. While they're not going to earn any titles like "genius" or "one-of-a-kind," a steady touring schedule and a recipe for success will help them capture teenage hearts nationwide.

Drinking for Dennis Erectus
CHUG FOR CHARITY:
This time the benefit to help former KOME DJ Dennis Erectus in his recovery process is going upscale. The wine, cheese and dessert bar A Perfect Finish will become the venue for up to 100 folks who donate $50 to the cause. Thirty years ago, Erectus joined the staff at KOME and would never have known that his more-than-controversial behavior on the air would be celebrated in a chic wine bar decades later. Many tidbits will be auctioned off, and let us hope that the polished wood surfaces and lavish interior of A Perfect Finish don't dispel the debauchery. The only thing missing will be half-naked nuns doing commentary while Donald Duck relieves himself in the fireplace. Now that would be a perfect finish.

Joan Sebastian
MEXICAN IDOL:
Known in Mexico as "El Poeta del Pueblo" (the People's Poet), Joan Sebastian is the original Kelly Clarkson, except he's from Mexico and his success came more than 30 years ago. What, then, could he possibly have in common with the American Idol star? Long before Paula and Simon were arguing over performance scores, Mexico ran a similar TV show in which contestants were judged before a live audience. Despite receiving criticism from the judging panel, Sebastian won over the crowd and went on to become one of the most successful Latin songwriters in history. His career earned him three Grammys, five Latin Grammys and numerous Top 40 hits both in the States and in Mexico. After overcoming cancer in 1999, Sebastian still produces the kind of pop songs that would make anyone an idol.

Meshell Ndegeocello
SOULFUL SOUNDS:
Though she graced the pop charts in the early '90s with her single, "If That's Your Boyfriend," Meshell Ndegeocello chose to tread a different path than most aspiring musicians. Instead of writing songs that would be easily accessible, Ndegeocello focused her abilities on creating material with artistic substance, a decidedly noncommercial decision that enabled her to blatantly address issues of race, sex and politics. The bass player/singer also explored music beyond her original R&B sound, teaming up with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny for her highly praised 2007 release, The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams.

The Pogues
DIRTY OLD TOWN:
Back in the early '80s, when the Pogues first caught people's attention with their booze-drenched Irish-folk-meets-punk-rock-music, the reactions were mixed. After all, there weren't many bands like them (if any), and their raucous live performances could turn peaceful bars into chaotic war-zones. But the wild nature of the group was enough to catch the attention of the Clash, who chose them to open for them on their 1984 tour. Soon after, the Pogues amassed a loyal fan base smitten on good whiskey and rowdy drinking tunes. Moreover, the band seems responsible for an entire folk-punk movement, inspiring bands like Flogging Molly to take a double shot at the big time. Catch the London legends at one of their four gigs this week at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Exotic Erotic Ball
FLESH FOR FANTASY:
Probably the most anticipated Halloween event, now in its 28th year, were it's pretty much mandatory to let out your inner sexed up wild self is the Exotic Erotic Ball hitting the Cow Palace tonight in all its leather, lace, vinyl and rubber glory. A few years ago E! Entertainment Network dubbed the EEB as "the world's wildest, sexiest party" and if you've ever ventured into this Caligulan evening of blatant debauchery, then you know just how true that assessment is. The 2007 Exotic Erotic Ball—and all around flesh fest—features Peaches, Vau de Vire Society, Donald Glaude, Bubba Sparxxx, The Spyderz, Snoop Dogg, Tera Patrick, Danny Bonaduce and just about anyone else involved in the international house, club and adult film scenes. If you haven't gotten all of the hedonism out of your system when the Exotic Erotic Ball shuts down around 2am, head over to the Official EEB After Party at the Gold Club (1550 Howard St., San Francisco) that keeps the ball gag rolling until 7am.
