The Sweet Revenge
BEST SERVED COLD:
A local pop-punk act with a promising future, the Sweet Revenge is a newly formed rock band that's dashing out of the gates with reckless abandon. Their music emanates youthful enthusiasm, with a Billy-Joe-esque vocalist and tight guitar riffage. Catchy hooks, vocal harmonies, and raucous interludes evoke an in-your-face attitude represented visually by mo-hawk hairdos. Though you've probably never heard of them, for three bucks, you're not going to be disappointed. And who knows, you may be witnessing the Next Big Thing before they're watered down by record execs and MTV.

Willie Nelson
BOLDTEXT:
GUITAR AID: Outlaw country-rocker Willie Nelson twangs his way out west to satisfy the masses of baby-boomer fans he garnered in the '70s. After the success of his 1975 album, The Red Headed Stranger, the Texan songwriter paired up with Waylon Jennings to release a slew of country classics, solidifying his legendary status. Even his guitar, a battered Martin he named "Trigger", became an emblem of American music, and the cowboy-hippie troubadour himself is no less of an iconic figure. Nelson, along with Merle Haggard and Ray Price, arrive in San Francisco to support the trio's newest album, Last of the Breed, which features Nelson's "Back to Earth" and Haggard's "Sweet Jesus". The trio finishes their 4-day run at the Fillmore tonight.

Monkey
SIMIAN SKANK:
Usher in the spring with a band as warm and laid back as the flawless weather. Celebrating their 10th year as a touring and recording band, third wave ska legends Monkey skank their way to The Blank Club for a Friday night show in front of a home crowd. Founder Curtis Meacham lays down funky guitar licks while a lively horn section spouts vibrant melodies bursting with Latin flavor. Appearances by past band members--there are 39 of them--will mix things up as the group recoups from a lengthy European tour. Riding the high of a recently established record deal, the band's future is looking bright. But commercial success or not, one thing's for sure: Monkey will continue to rock steady with or without the financial backing they surely deserve.

INQ
STONED AND ROCKED:
Don't get caught red-eyed on the couch tonight--Johnny is putting forth a local live music lineup that should get even the most complacent slacker out to the bar. Starting out this sick night of noise are LA prog-rockers Opus Dai, followed by the alt-rock stylings of Kaura from Berkeley. Then, the agro sounds of Trigger Renegade out of Santa Cruz, followed by our own local alt-rock heavies, My Monster. And to cap off this stellar night of rock & roll, INQ sets up at midnight to celebrate its five-year anniversary and to close out a 4/20 music celebration that'll have you holding up your lighter up in the air, and not just to light that fatty.

Ron Jeremy @ Vivid
MONEY SHOT:
There's almost too much going on in the land of ultra lounges on Friday night, but Vivid isn't about to get squeezed out as they bring in the big gun--everyman pornstar Ron Jeremy--to San Jose for a guest appearance. The club is touting Jeremy as the star of "Surreal Life," but he's only appeared on the show twice. He's far better known for the almost 2000 adult flicks in which he's starred over the years, and the drama that surrounds him in the adult film industry. Sometimes known as "The Hedgehog," the pornstar certainly has gotten around in the entertainment industry--you might need a condom just to shake his hand. Besides hosting a celebrity, Vivid will of course be throwing a huge party with hip-hop and dance music all night long. Speaking of long...

Lock 'N Load
KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE:
Who said rock is dead? The underground metal scene comes to life with the brothers Locke and their latest outfit, Locke 'n' Load. Blending punk, heavy metal, and '80's glam-rock, the three-piece band turns their amps to 11 for a night of high voltage mayhem that will leave you drenched in sweat, blood, or a little of both. Recently signing with indie label Guinite Records, the group is in the process of recording their second album, Celebrity Killing Spree. In case the CD's title doesn't give you a hint, this band isn't interested in pop-stardom or TRL appearances--they just wanna get up on stage and rock you harder than a 1973 Kiss concert.

Death Angel
DEATH BECOMES THEM:
Bay Area thrash-metal legends Death Angel bring local fans a dose of their heavier-than-lead rock 'n roll before heading to the Philippines to appear at the "Pulp Summer Slam Seven" in Manila. The San Francisco based quintet emerged from the '80's metal scene to produce their own unique brand of heavy metal noise. Ripe with fiery guitar riffs and intense, searing vocals, Death Angel is a band worthy of carrying the label of "great", despite looming under the shadow of the genre's bigwigs (i.e. Metallica). Known for their unabashed fury and brash aggression, the band can also deliver power ballads sweet enough to bring Satan himself to tears. So get ready to bang your head and pump your fist in the air- Death Angel knows no mercy.

Stephen Marley
YOU ARE GETTING VERRRY IRIE:
Earning five Grammys without ever recording his own album, Stephen Marley finally decided it was time to do just that. Mind Control was released in March, and Marley has been touring the nation in support of it. His music combines all his favorite influences, including reggae, rock, R&B, nyabinghi rhythms, flamenco and hip-hop. There are all kinds of soulfulness being injected into Marley's music that ultimately create a sweet and rhythmic musical compilation that feels light, despiteits references to modern day slavery, politics and other heavy issues. For those that aren't able to make it to Coachella, The Fillmore show is a welcome substitute for the hot and sweaty desert performance will have to give later this month.

Xiu Xiu
CRAPTASTICALLY DELICIOUS:
With a sound as strange as their former band name (the Indestructible Beat of Palo Alto), the San Francisco-based trio Xiu Xiu makes its way to the Bottom of the Hill to present their latest musical creations. Best described as "experimental indie rock" with traces of ambient noise, punk and folk, the group's erratic melodies and morose lyrics create a texturally bizarre sound that is dark and foreboding, though somehow pleasantly appealing. Deeply poetic and artistically avant-garde, Xiu Xiu's sentimental visions reflect the irony of a post-modern world brilliantly defecating towards cultural demise.

Placebo
TAKE YOUR MEDS:
Placebo has been on tour and gaining popularity ever since the release of their album, Meds, a year ago. The glam rock and electro group has taken some of the electro out of their music for a refreshing and welcome modern sound. The band is one of many counting the days before their Coachella performance, but again, the Fillmore will be a much better venue to catch the band than the dusty Coachella desert. The somewhat goth reprise in the single, "Meds," might make anyone in the heat of Coachella think, "Wait a second, did I take my meds?"(

Jet
APPLE WINDFALL:
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Jet has quickly risen to the forefront of the vintage-rock scene encompassed by bands like The White Stripes, Wolfmother, and the The Strokes. These late sixties sound-a-likes are rocking audiences worldwide, and for two good reasons: they style their music after the greatest era in rock 'n' roll, and Led Zeppelin stopped making albums thirty years ago. Consequently, a niche of retro-rockers has broken into the mainstream. One look at these guys and you'll feel like you've gone back in time: long hair, sideburns, peace sign necklaces, aviator sunglasses--it's all there, minus the flower power thing. Oh, and the music is good too. It's not Hendrix, but the distorted guitar riffs and catchy vocal melodies in "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" prove that while the '70's may be long gone, the decade's musical legacy lives on.

KRS- One
SCIENCE LESSONS:
The essence of the hip-hop MC, KRS-One comes to Ruby Skye to drop a little lyrical science and a whole shit-ton of knowledge on a scene that could use a little lesson. Easily one of the most highly regarded rappers of all time, KRS-One flows with a style and substance that every MC after him as tried to adopt, but none could ever come close to the Teacher's socially poignant, often political and always controversial takes on modern society. Running solo for some time now, KRS-One's game keeps getting better, and his latest, Life, doesn't pull any punches.
